cat's cradle

architects for animals:
benefit for fixnation

exhibit 2014

In our shelter for California cats, we made a home to perch and observe. In harmony with our climate and taking cues from some of the classics of outdoor living, it creates a lounging surface, supplies dappled shade, and provides hours of entertainment for cats to play with the strings.

Experimenting with the irregular use of regular geometry, five aluminum hula hoops pitch, roll and yaw in a constellation of orbits that remains rigid through triangulation. Three of the hoops provide gravity structure while two – the “cat ring” and the “key ring” – are woven with a spiraling cat’s cradle of rayon webbing.
