The subdivision of standard residential lots into 'small lots' is an opportunity to remake the settlement pattern of Los Angeles. When done carefully, this increased density in our existing residential fabric allows the continued enjoyment of outdoor space so characteristic of Southern California but also an allocation of that space sustainable into the foreseeable future. Here the formal and informal spaces of the city, the front and rear yards, are re-oriented perpendicular to the street. Staggered on the site, each building in the subdivision engages its front yard as an outdoor room.
