A new Early Head Start program reinforces the importance of this location as a community center for its mid-city neighborhood. The adaptive reuse of a long-span structure, originally a supermarket, inserts new light-filled entrances and colorful, appropriately-scaled classroom spaces into the site.
The adjoining multi-story YMCA was designed and built by Robert Kennard, FAIA and has served as a focus and source of pride for its community. This project is an important contribution, bringing much needed services and a contemporary design sensibility to the complex.
