The challenge presented by the redevelopment of Isla Vista, a college town on the coast of Southern California, is the sustainability of community in the face of transience. The proposal is conceived as a series of armatures and infrastructures that withstand being attached to and detached from. These armatures establish the presence of the University, of the community, of regional connections and of the natural environment within and across Isla Vista. In the face of inevitable erosion along the town's famed bluff, lots would continue to be acquired and set aside for public access, re-establishing Isla Vista's relationship to its setting of exceptional natural beauty.
